If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth is the greatest enemy of the State.

No other statement, perhaps, describes the official stand regarding the mysterious 'death' of Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. From the very beginning, that is 1945, statements and counter-statements have only intensified the mystery. While one group of politicians did their best to prove the 'death', some leapt out to make the selling of the death story their business. Yet others contradicted and questioned. The whole scenario has become so murky that the most people, especially the present generation have led to rest their inquisitive instinct, which is so active in other fields of life. The myth has overpowered reality. All that exists now is opinion.

But we are not talking about historians and politicians who have occupied high positions. While historians tread safe and some trade in spreading outright lies, politicians occupying high offices in the country certainly know better. Yet they have joined the bandwagon of falsehood and deception. You will see this clearly on www.missionnetaji.org. It has been our effort to lay bare the truth.

It will hurt many people, shock many more. That is inevitable. History is no respecter of persons.

We know many will scoff at us. We will be sneered at by 'rational' death-believers. We have been told by so many, including our friends, "How does it matter any more?" Or, "You have enough time to kill". We beg to differ. We have decided to look into the eyes of the death-mongers directly.

The fact is that there was no plane crash at Taihoku on August 18, 1945. So no one could have died, leave alone Netaji.

How dare we say that? Who are we? We are a small group of Indians who are not even amateur historians. Some of are into IT sector, some write newspaper articles and some do research, even market the madness called cricket. We happened to bump onto each other and chose to stick together and fight till we remove the veil from the mystery completely. We don't believe we need to be historians who are paid fat packets by universities and publish whatever is politically correct, sometimes with a dash of defiance though. All we know is that we want to know the truth. At the same time, we know that millions of Indians are with us. Our confidence stems from our shared sense of anguish, anger and shame.

All we have done is to put together the facts. The facts about how official enquiries ignored vital pieces of evidence; facts about how misleading and false statements were made in that temple of modern democracy, the Parliament; facts about how even the Prime Minister's Office tried to subvert the enquiries; facts about how key people lied; facts about how a certain newspaper group is still selling the story of 'death' despite evidence to the contrary; facts about how the roles played by various members of Netaji's family. Our opinion does not count here. We lay all the shocking facts in front of you. You are the final judge.

Three factors helped us to start our journey. First, the Justice Mukherjee Commission, which we learn from reliable sources, has told the Government of India that the aircrash theory is bunkum. Therefore we have the right to know what really happened. We want to know why a fraud was perpetrated on the nation for 60 years. The second factor that helped was the exposition by Anuj Dhar in his remarkable book Back from Dead: Inside the Subhas Bose Mystery. And, above all, we must thank some unknown heroes who have worked relentlessly in the background to bring out the truth. What we have learnt from them is invaluable.

We realized that if we, Indians, let this opportunity go we might never get to know the truth again. This, perhaps, is our last chance to know the truth.
