Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose & Indian Independence - Indian 60th Independance Day Special

August 15th 2007, marks 60th Anniversary of Independence of India. Scores of patriots sacrificed to achieve Independence. So 60th Anniversary of Independence is an extremely joyous occasion for all the Indians across the globe. If you look at Indian Freedom History after Mahatma Gandhi, the name that stands out is of Subhas Chandra Bose or Netaji. Netaji is really one of the most influential and charismatic personalities of India. Netaji sacrificed everything for the sake of our beloved India. Finally, he even gave his life for the sake of our country.

'Respected Leader' - Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, was one of the most important leaders for Indian Independence against the British colonial rule. He was born Subhas Chandra Bose but he is known to people as "Netaji" which means 'respected leader'. Subhas Chandra Bose was born on January 23rd, 1897. His Bengali family was affluent and lived in Cuttack, Orissa. His father, Janakinath Bose, was a member of Bengal Legislative Council. He was a public prosecutor. Subhas went to Raven Shaw Collegiate School in Cuttack.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose & India's Independence

excerpts from Mihir Bose's enthralling
"The lost hero : a biography of Subhas Bose "

It is our duty,' Bose told his Indian National Army, 'to pay for our liberty with our own blood. The freedom that we shall win through our sacrifice and exertions, we shall be able to preserve with our own strength.' ....."

The Influence of Bose

Bose advocated complete freedom for India at the earliest, whereas the Congress Committee wanted it in phases, through a Dominion status. Other younger leaders including Jawaharlal Nehru supported Bose and finally at the historic Lahore Congress convention, the Congress had to adopt Poorna Swaraj (complete freedom) as its motto. Bhagat Singh's martyrdom and the inability of the Congress leaders to save his life infuriated Bose and he started a movement opposing the Gandhi-Irvin Peace Pact. He was imprisoned and expelled from India.

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose

While the Gandhi /Nehru faction of Congress has garnered much of the credit for India's freedom struggle, it is important to remember that India's freedom movement was in fact a movement of the masses and there were a number of great leaders with fierce patriotism and great visionary ideas who sacrificed their entire lives for the nation's cause. We continue our series on the freedom fighters, on the occasion of Netaji's 102nd birthday.
