THE NIP INVESTIGATION

In 1985-86, Northern India Patrika, a daily published from Uttar Pradesh, ran a series of investigative reports by VN Arora, late Nirmal Nibedon and Kauser Hussein (News Editor) on mysterious Gumnami Baba/Bhagwanji, who lived in Lucknow, Neemsar, Basti, Ayodhya and lastly in Faizabad. The first five installments are reproduced below. The rest shall follow in course of time.

1. The intellectual rebel

The trail is cold, but the leads are hot - the hottest ever in the history of post Independence India.

2. Stalking the rebel

The mountain of material left behind by him would speak volumes for posterity; this much was clear as we stalked this rebel.

3. A fair lady comes at midnight

This lady who appeared literally from nowhere in 1962, and suddenly vanished subsequently, was none other than Leela Roy.

4. 'I pledge to keep this secret'

The lawyer disclosed to our team that important figures and distinguished personalities and leaders of the country were very much in the know of the existence of Netaji.

5. A saint or a statesman?

He knew beforehand who is to come to Him and he would draw them magnetically towards Him.

6. The tell-tale tape

From behind the curtain, it was exceedingly difficult to fathom the expression of the Man's countenance. There was truly something mysterious about it.

7. The lame law lurks

One fact was getting increasingly clear. He was a Man with many purposes, unfortunate enough to be unaccepted and unhonoured as a great personality during his life-time.
