Ground Zero: Parliament discuss Mukherjee Commission report

Why are you so keen to prove that Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose is dead? -- Rajya Sabha MPs to Home Minister Shivraj Patil.

With the help of the Speaker (Somnath Chatterjee), the Congress succeeded in putting to rest a debate on the subject. -- Forward Bloc leader Ashok Ghosh on the discussion in Lok Sabha.

On May 17, 2006, the Congress-led UPA Government made public the report of Justice Mukehrjee Commission of Inquiry into the reported death of Subhas Chandra Bose. The report affirmed the popular perception that the "death" was a cover for Netaji\\'s escape to the Soviet Union, from where he was to continue freedom struggle.

The publication of the report at the fag end of the Budget Session of Parliament rendered it impossible for the lawmakers to thrash the issue out in detail. And so, the matter had to be taken up again when the Monsoon Session drew to a close.

As is evident from the following details, Congress has stuck to the line that Netaji had died in a plane crash in Taipei, which the Taiwan Government said had never taken place. Home Minister Shivraj Patil said the Government rejected the report of Justice Mukherjee, a retired judge of the Supreme Court of India, because the Government favoured the reports of Shah Nawaz Khan, a Congressman, and Justice GD Khosla, Indira Gandhi\\'s biographer and a pal of Jawaharlal Nehru\\'s. This is as simple as it gets.

So far as the discussions went, Dr Murli Manohar Joshi, former HRD Minister, shone in the Rajya Sabha, whereas Mr Subrata Bose, son of Netaji\\'s elder brother Sarat Chandra Bose held the fort in the Lok Sabha.
